Eating Well on GLP-1 Medications
Wayfit Editorial·
GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy suppress appetite dramatically. For many people, that's the point: finally feeling full before finishing a large meal, or not feeling hungry at all between meals. But eating very little for an extended period creates a real risk that doesn't get discussed as often as the benefits.
When you lose weight rapidly and aren't eating enough protein, a significant portion of what you lose can be lean mass. Muscle. That matters not just for how you look or feel but for your metabolism long-term, since muscle tissue is what keeps your resting calorie burn reasonably high.
Protein first
The most important nutritional priority on a GLP-1 medication is getting enough protein. When your appetite is suppressed, every bite competes for space. Protein needs to win.
Most research on muscle preservation during weight loss points to targets around 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. If your appetite is so suppressed that you're only eating one or two small meals, you need to be deliberate about making those meals protein-heavy.
Good sources: eggs, chicken, fish, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, legumes. If solid food feels difficult because of nausea, protein shakes or yogurt can help close the gap.
GI side effects are real
Nausea, constipation, and discomfort are among the most common reasons people adjust their dose or stop GLP-1 medications. What you eat affects how bad these side effects are.
Large meals tend to be worse than small ones. Eating quickly tends to be worse than eating slowly. Fatty foods slow digestion further and can worsen nausea when your stomach is already emptying more slowly due to the medication. High-fiber foods help with constipation but can add to bloating if you increase them too quickly.
Eating smaller amounts more slowly, choosing lower-fat meals during adjustment periods, and increasing fiber gradually are practical steps that can reduce how uncomfortable the side effects are.
Stay hydrated
Reduced food intake often means reduced fluid intake, since a lot of water comes from food. Deliberate hydration matters more when you're eating less. Aim for water or low-calorie drinks throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty.
Whole foods over processed ones
With appetite suppressed, you have fewer calories to work with, which makes the quality of those calories more important. A small meal built around protein, vegetables, and whole grains does more for your body than the same calorie count from processed food.
This isn't about being rigid. It's about recognizing that what you eat matters more when there's less room for empty calories.
What this looks like in practice
A reasonable approach is to plan meals rather than rely on hunger cues, since the medication changes those signals significantly. At each meal: protein first, then vegetables, then other foods if there's still room. Small portions. Eat slowly. Drink water.
Resistance training alongside the medication helps preserve muscle during weight loss and is worth incorporating if you're able to. Even two sessions per week makes a difference.
GLP-1 medications can be highly effective tools. Pairing them with intentional eating habits makes those results more durable.
